Headaches in children are fairly common.
The common causes are:
- Refractory error (poor eyesight)
- Sinusitis
- Migraine
- Stress/tension headache
It is important to remember that headaches can be a sign of a more serious condition such as meningitis, brain abscess (pus collection) or even a brain tumour.
A history, examination, if required a fundus check and possibly an MRI brain should help identify the cause of the headache.
The treatment depends on the cause of the headache.
In general,
Paracetamol is a simple analgesic that can be taken for temporary relief of any type of headache.
Adequate sleep helps reduce the amount of headache.
Avoid any food substances if they trigger your headaches.
Avoid caffeinated drinks such as coffee, coca-cola, thums up etc.
Adopt a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and regular exercise.
